Winterization on Cape Cod
Protect seasonal Cape Cod homes from frozen pipes, leaks and costly spring surprises.
Before you decide
What does winterizing a seasonal Cape Cod home include?
Plumbing winterization is a property-specific shutdown plan for water lines, fixtures and water-using equipment. The scope should identify what will be isolated, drained or protected, what must remain operating and how the home will be reopened. Shutting off the main water valve alone does not remove water already inside the plumbing.

Can I turn off the heat after shutting off the water?
Do not assume the home is protected just because the domestic water is off. Heating systems and other equipment may still contain water or need power. Have the shutdown plan identify systems that must remain operating. For an occupied or heated home while you are away, the Red Cross recommends leaving the heat on at no lower than 55°F.
What should be included in spring reopening?
Confirm a plan to restore the water supply, inspect for leaks and check the fixtures and equipment covered by the shutdown. Tell the technician about any work done during the closure. Reopening should be coordinated before the home is needed for occupancy.
When should I arrange winterization?
Arrange the visit before freezing conditions and after the last planned use of the plumbing. Give Durfee your closing date, access instructions and expected reopening date so the proposed scope fits your seasonal schedule.
